Hello!!
I’m jenny from Mandarlyn!!
Today I’m going to tell you a jeju story..Gosanri – style pottery!!
Let’s begin!
Neolithic means new stone age and it refers to the time before people starting using metal.
On the Korean peninsula, the neolithic began around 8000years ago.
But in Jeju, it started even earlier.
The oldest pottwey that has been discovered on the island dates back to about 10,000 years ago!!
It is called Gosanri – style pottery.
It was named after place where it was discovered.
Gosan is a village(~ri) in southwest Jeju.
The pottery was made before the earliest known pottery on the Korean peninsula, which is called Comb-Patterned Pottery.
If you take a close look at the outer surface you’ll see all sorts of marks and squiggles that look like little scars.
They tell us a secret abouthow the pottery was made to be strong and last a long time.
People mixed little bits of straw and plant strems into clay and kneaded it all together.
Then the pottery was put into very hot fire.
The stems and straw got burned off in the fire, and left those little traces on the surface.
It was pretty clever of neolithic-era people to come up with this method of making good, strong containers, don’t you think??
I think that these neolithic people are very smart !!
I hope that I invent something that can help many people😊.
See you next time!!
