Hello!
I’m Jenny from Mandarlyn!!
Today I’m going to tell you a story about…(drumroll) the rock walls of Jeju’s coastline!!!
Let’s begin!!!!
People built round walls in the ocean out of rocks.
When the tide comes in and the water is high, fish enter the enclosure.
Then, when the tide goes out and the wall is above water, the ones still inside can’t escape.
This rock wall is called Wondam and acts like a permanent fishing net made out of rocks.
How clever is that?
As an island with a long coastline, it was easy for pirates and others to attack Jeju.
So people built long, high walls all along the shore where they could climb up and keep an eye out for invaders.
These rock walls(called Hwanhae-Jangseong) were not easy to build.
People started them during the Goryeo Dynasty in the 10th century and kept working on them all the way into the Joseon Dynasty, which began in 1392.
I think that Jeju people are really smart and clever.
I hope I could be someone that helps people in many clever ways like Jeju people.
I have drawn pictures of the sea that make you feel good just by looking at them.
See you next time!!
